Frostburg State University: Sustaining Campus and Community

(2012 - 2014) Frostburg State University’s “Sustaining Campus and Community” dialogue series began its second year in the spring of 2012. The goal of these sessions it to help the community of Frostburg, Maryland strengthen neighborhood relationships and foster a nonviolent, civil culture. Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel

(2014) The Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel project has been in the works for many years and is ongoing. Safety and Health in Facilitating a Transition (SHIFT)

(2013) Between July and November of 2013, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) convened a stakeholder group of 25 individuals representing nine interest groups to make recommendations for the future of its onsite septic program. (2012) IEN facilitated a capacity building and partnership initiative with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Maryland local governments.On the premise that healthy terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems can most successfully be achieved in partnership with local government, IEN led a process to address the greatest threat to Maryland's natural resources and the critical ecosystem support functions they provide, watershed use change. Waynesboro Upper South River Watershed Planning

(2012) IEN facilitated in 2012 a multi-stakeholder consensus building effort involving diverse stakeholders in the Upper South River watershed. Stakeholders were charged with developing a mission and vision for the watershed, and identifying a structure for watershed stewardship. Working closely with three project partners, IEN designed a three-meeting process that would accommodate the partner budget, and allowed partners to do much of the work. Chesapeake Bay Roundtable: Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act

(1986-1987) IEN facilitated the Chesapeake Bay Land-Use Roundtable, an endeavor funded by the Virginia General Assembly and convened to develop consensus for a clear set of policies and programs to guide land use planning and development around the Bay. The recommendations resulting from the 18-month Roundtable served as a basis for the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act. This work was the precursor to more than a dozen Bay-related projects for IEN and to its current work on coastal resilience in the Commonwealth.

Wyckoff/Eagle Harbor Superfund Redevelopment

One of the United States’ most beautiful places is also the home of one of its most shameful episodes. Bainbridge Island, home to some twenty-three thousand people, has gorgeous views of Mt. Eco-Logical Pilot Project—Free Bridge Area Congestion Relief

(2014) The U.S. 250 link across the Rivanna River known locally as Free Bridge is a key connector for local and regional traffic, but the level of service for the 53,000 daily vehicles that cross it is already grossly inadequate and will be 25 percent worse by 2040. Elizabeth River Project: Eastern Branch Strategy

(2014) The Elizabeth River Eastern Branch Strategy is being developed by multiple stakeholders within the Elizabeth River watershed. The Institute, working with the Elizabeth River Project, served as facilitator throughout the project, including four large group meetings. After creating the vision below, the group reached consensus on a series of goals and actions intended to identify and address contamination, restore wildlife habitat, and engage the public. Virginia Stormwater Consensus Building

(2007)  The IEN facilitated a consensus-building process to help the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) consider amendments to portions of the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Board's Virginia Stormwater Management Program (VSMP) Permit Regulations. IEN work included refining the goals and desired outcomes of the discussion, interviewing members of a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to introduce the consensus building process and assess key needs, interests and concerns, and facilitating three meetings of the TAC.
