Chapel Hill, North Carolina Airport

(1992 - 1993) Working with representatives from the University of North Carolina, local governments, citizen groups, and aviation advocacy organizations, IEN convened a group to address operational and relocation options related to a University-owned airport.

VACCR Community Solutions

(2003-2004) Funded by a NAFCM grant to the Virginia Association for Community Conflict Resolution (VACCR) , IEN developed a training for community mediation centers and their experienced mediators to build their capacity to facilitate complex multi-party community issues. IEN conducted 2-day workshops for 8 centers in Virginia, and many of these centers implemented these skills to facilitate local community issues.

Chatahoochee National Forest, Georgia

(1993) IEN convened a group of diverse stakeholders and mediated a meeting charged with exploring mutually acceptable alternatives to the proposed timber projects in a sensitive 14,000 acre area.

George Washington National Forest

The IEN facilitated a working group to enhance public involvement with the National Forest Management Plan's most recent revision. Similar work has been conducted in Tennessee, Indiana, and other forests located in Virginia.

Virginia Waste Tire End-User Reimbursement Advisory Committee

(1992 - 1993)  Supported by grants from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and W. Alton Jones Foundation, IEN led a consensus building effort involving a diverse group of stakeholders to advise the Virginia DEQ on developing policy for using the Waste Tire Fund.

South Carolina Wetlands Steering Committee

(1989-1990) A collaborative negotiation process facilitated by the IEN for over eighteen months, in which representatives of the EPA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Health and Environmental Concerns, home builders, wetland consultants, and industry leaders in forestry, mining and agriculture met monthly to develop recommendations for wetland permitting procedures.

Virginia State Generic Management Plan for Pesticides and Ground Water

(1988 - 1992)  IEN facilitated a year-long process for a task force composed of twelve Virginia state agencies to develop a state plan for protecting ground water from pesticides.

Uranium Mining Task Force

(1984 - 1985) The Uranium Mining Task Force was created by the Coal and Energy Commission of the Virginia state legislature in January 1984 to address the risk and economic consequences of allowing uranium mining in the state. Elizabeth River Watershed Plan Revision

(2007-2008) The Elizabeth River Project underwent a yearlong revision process to the watershed Action Plan, last updated in 2002. The Elizabeth River is an important tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. While serving as a vehicle for economic activity, with many industries on the River served by its navigable waters, the River has also served as a reminder of the harm of environmental contamination. National Non-Point Source Strategy
