Strengthening Nutrient Management Planning on Virginia's Farms

Through a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, IEN worked with Sustainable Chesapeake in convening a stakeholder Nutrient Management Leadership Team to develop recommendations for enhancing farmer participation in the Virginia Department of Conservation Nutrient Management Program. The approach centered on a survey to query farmers, nutrient management planners and industry representatives on the strengths and challenges associated with the current programmatic approach. Based on survey responses, Team members developed several recommendations including an ongoing stakeholder advisory group to work with the Department program elements, creating several paths for participation in the program, making plan outputs and revisions more user-friendly and partnering on education and outreach. The final report is available here and the recommendations fact sheet can be found here
