IEN facilitated in 2012 a multi-stakeholder consensus building effort involving diverse stakeholders in the Upper South River watershed. Stakeholders were charged with developing a mission and vision for the watershed, and identifying a structure for watershed stewardship. Working closely with three project partners, IEN designed a three-meeting process that would accommodate the partner budget, and allowed partners to do much of the work. IEN provided coaching and guidance for partner interviews with stakeholders during the assessment phase, developed the meeting agenda and process, facilitated the meetings, and reviewed the partner meeting summaries and final report. Significant controversies emerged but were addressed successfully, leading to a consensus mission, vision and “SMART” goals. The group is still hoping to implement the structure envisioned for continuing watershed stewardship.
