Based on a directive from the Virginia General Assembly, the Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry convened a stakeholder panel consisting of individuals representing 19 organizations with interests relating to Virginia farm wineries and activities. (2017) Hospitals and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers play a critical role in rural healthcare throughout Virginia, where needs are great in the face of limited resources. Two programs within the Virginia Department of Health (Office of Health Equity and Office of EMS) partnered on convening a stakeholder planning team and conducting regional listening sessions to hear about rural emergency care challenges and to identify potential strategies for addressing those challenges. Through a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, IEN worked with Sustainable Chesapeake in convening a stakeholder Nutrient Management Leadership Team to develop recommendations for enhancing farmer participation in the Virginia Department of Conservation Nutrient Management Program. The Central Appalachia Food Heritage project (CAFH), working with local and regional partners, is a collaborative, community-based effort that helps to build knowledge about the foodways of central Appalachia, and cultivate opportunities to build community vibrancy and thriving local economies. The CAFH project is a new effort, and the goals and activities are evolving with input from project partners. We welcome your ideas, participation, and suggestions as this project develops.
(2010 - Present) The Clinch River Valley Initiative (CRVI) is a pioneering effort to build local economies in the coalfields of Southwest Virginia, focusing on the Clinch River Valley—one of the most biodiverse river systems in North America. Working at a watershed scale with several local partners, this grassroots effort has developed significant support and momentum throughout the region. (2012 - 2013) The 2013 Virginia Rural Health Plan was created to improve health opportunities and health outcomes in rural Virginia, and to reduce disparities between rural, urban, regional, racial, and other population groups. In 2012 and 2013, the IEN collaborated with the Virginia Rural Health Association, the Virginia Public Health Association, and the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity to conduct a series of surveys, interviews, public meetings, and conferences. (2007-2012) The Institute for Environmental Negotiation (IEN), working in partnership with the Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension, convened and facilitated the first meeting of the Virginia Food System Council in the spring of 2009. (2012) A new project was proposed in the Shenandoah Valley to build a facility north of Harrisonburg that would convert poultry litter to energy. As part of the preliminary ground work to gather information on possible health impacts of the project, the VCU Center on Human Needs was asked in 2012 to conduct a Health Impact Assessment Analysis (HIA) of this proposed project to engage community members in gathering information as part of the Health Impact Assessment.
